L’information literacy en débat : faut-il former les étudiants ?

A signaler, un texte qui semble faire beaucoup de débats outre-Atlantique, car il constitue une charge très critique contre la nécessité de « l’information literacy » : il s’agit du texte de Stanley Wilder : « Information Literacy Makes All the Wrong Assumptions,” publié dans Chronicle of Higher Education, 51, no. 18: B13 ; il est également disponible en ligne, mais moyennant paiement.

Sur l’auteur : “Wilder is the associate dean of the River Campus libraries at the University of Rochester and author, most recently, of Demographic Change in Academic Librarianship (Association of Research Libraries, 2003). “

Extraits du texte : “ …information literacy remains the wrong solution to the wrong problem facing librarianship. It mistakes the nature of the Internet threat, and it offers a response at odds with higher education’s traditional mission. Information literacy does nothing to help libraries compete with the Internet, and it should be discarded. Librarians should not assume that college students welcome their help in doing research online. The typical freshman assumes that she is already an expert user of the Internet, and her daily experience leads her to believe that she can get what she wants online without having to undergo a training program. Indeed, if she were to use her library’s Web site, with its dozens of user interfaces, search protocols, and limitations, she might with some justification conclude that it is the library, not her, that needs help understanding the nature of electronic information retrieval.”

Voici un autre extrait, d’une réaction au texte de Wilder, qui pourra éclairer celui-ci :

« Wilder makes a strong case against what he calls "information literacy" — perhaps more acurately called "library literacy" — which seeks to teach students information-seeking skills. As he notes, "…information literacy would have librarians teach students to be more like them." He says that trying to teach students how to search databases and so forth "segregates those skills from disciplinary knowledge" and there "is no better way to marginalize academic librarianship." And further, information literacy is harmful "because it encourages librarians to teach ways to deal with the complexity of information retrieval, rather than to try to reduce that complexity." “

Commentaire personnel : La conclusion qui ressort de cette charge de S. Wilder, c’est que les bibliothécaires doivent abandonner sans tarder tout effort de formation des étudiants à la recherche de l’information… La critique est sévère, puisque la maîtrise de l’information serait jugée malfaisante, dangereuse ou pernicieuse (harmful) ; elle reste assez classique cependant, en reprochant aux bibliothécaires de séparer les compétences documentaires des disciplines (débat d’actualité également en France !) ; elle reste assez étonnante et peut plonger dans des abîmes de perplexité, car si l’on comprend bien l’explication ci-dessus, ce que reproche Wilder à la « maîtrise de l’information », c’est de « traiter de la complexité » de la recherche d’information, au lieu de réduire cette complexité. Autrement dit, la formation des étudiants ne ferait que compliquer les choses… ! C’est vrai que l’absence de formation est tellement plus simple !

Quoi qu’il en soit, une pièce de plus à apporter au débat sur la nature et l’enjeu de la formation à cette insaisissable "maîtrise de l’information"…
